Gender Identity and Reassignment

Two people shaking hands.

Because our doors are open to everyone, we aim to create an environment in which every employee, student and visitor feels equally welcome and valued, whatever their gender identity.

Gender reassignment involves someone expressing their gender in a way that differs from or is inconsistent with, the physical sex they were born with. The Equality Act 2010 protects anyone who intends to undergo the transition from harassment, victimisation or discrimination right from the moment they decide to start the process. This personal process may include undergoing medical procedures, or may simply include choosing to dress in a different way as part of the personal process of change.

LGBT History Month

Every February, the college joins the rest of the UK in marking Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT) History Month.

In spite of advances in LGBT rights in the last few years, we still have a long way to go before we achieve equality.

Worldwide, there are still seven countries where homosexuality is punishable with the death penalty and a further 70 where citizens can be imprisoned because of their sexual orientation.

In the UK, transgender people are more likely to experience harassment and abuse, and studies of the education system suggest bullying is widespread amongst transgender students.

City of Glasgow College will be marketing LGBT History Month with a series of events and activities with which both staff and students are encouraged to get involved.
