Overview

The Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) Intermediate Diploma in Accounting Qualification gives you practical, internationally recognised finance and accountancy skills that can open doors for you in any industry across the world.  Whether you’re looking for your first job in accountancy, or simply want to enhance your existing accounting skills, AAT will give you the training you need. Further details of the topics covered is provided in the section “What you Study” below. 

AAT offers a range of benefits for student members (including study support, career advice to help find the perfect job and exclusive discounts), as well as a route into chartered accountancy. If you choose to further your studies with one of the leading chartered professional bodies, such as ACCA, CIPFA or CIMA, your AAT qualification will give you generous exemptions.

This course requires attendance on both Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6-9pm for one academic year.

In addition to assessments at the end of each unit of study, you will also sit a synoptic assessment at the end of the academic year.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

  • AAT level 5; OR
  • One relevant* Higher at grade C or above; OR
  • Three relevant* National 5 courses at grade A; OR
  • Successful completion of an NC in Accounting; OR
  • Relevant work experience will be considered where employer referee details have been supplied.
  • Equivalent qualifications will be considered. 

*Qualifications cannot include any from the following list: Art and Design, Design and Manufacture, Drama, Graphic Communications, Health and Food Technology, Languages, Music, Media, Photography, Physical Education, ESOL.

You will be invited to attend a compulsory induction on Wednesday 21st June 2017 at 6.00 pm.

What you study

Level 3 Intermediate Diploma in Accounting (Level 6 in Scotland).

Level 3 introduces more complex accounting tasks, like maintaining cost accounting records and the preparation of reports and returns.  This level is perfect if you've completed Level 2, or you're already at a more intermediate level and you're looking to develop your accounting skills.

The units you will study include:

  • Advanced Bookkeeping.
  • Final Accounts Preparation.
  • Management Accounting: Costing.
  • Indirect Tax (VAT).
  • Spreadsheet Software.
  • Ethics for Accountants.

After the course

Careers

Once you've achieved the AAT Accounting qualification, you'll be able to:

  • Progress to Level 8 Advanced Diploma in Accounting.
  • Progress to chartered accountancy (gaining generous exemptions).
  • Become your own boss with our Members in Practice (MIP) scheme.
  • Progress to university with AAT giving you 160 UCAS points.
  • Work overseas with our internationally recognised qualification.
