Overview

This course provides the opportunity to achieve a professional qualification in the very popular, effective and enjoyable treatment, Body Massage. You will learn classical Swedish techniques, and how to adapt these to suit the needs of a variety of clients.

 

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

A qualification in Anatomy & Physiology, (minimum SCQF level 6, or equivalent).

If English is not your first language you will need to provide evidence that you have achieved ESOL Intermediate Level 2 (or equivalent).

 

What you study

  • Swedish Massage movements, for full body application, or specific areas, eg back & shoulders.
  • Variations of technique, to achieve relaxation, stress relief and a general sense of well-being; or a stimulating, uplifting effect.
  • The theory of massage, including its history, and the physical, physiological and psychological effects of the various movements.

 

After the course

Careers

A qualified massage therapist can seek employment in massage clinics, spas, on cruise ships, in hotel-based treatment rooms, and within healthcare services. There are also opportunities for self-employment.

Continuing Study

Successful completion may lead to further courses in other therapies, eg aromatherapy and reflexology.

 

Teaching

How the course is taught

A variety of learning and teaching methods are used, including lecturer presentations and practical demonstration, group work, research activities, and case study compilation.

Assessment methods

Assessments include observation of practical, a closed book paper and case study compilation.

Materials

All materials will be provided; theory materials in electronic format will be available from the College’s Virtual Learning Environment. Additional reading and useful websites will be recommended by your Lecturer.

Dress code

Students are asked to wear a suitable therapy uniform when carrying out treatments; a professional tunic and trousers are recommended.
