Overview

This course is for anyone looking to start their career in the Maritime Industry. It will introduce you to a range of topics and provide a background into how the Industry is regulated and the functions of the business ashore and at sea.

This course is an ideal introduction if you want to:

  • Work at sea as a Deck Officer.
  • Work at sea as an Engineer Officer.
  • Work in a ship management company.
  • Work in port operations.

If you want to work at sea this course will give you allow you to choose between a Deck Officer and an Engineering Officer career path. Successful completion of this course does not mean you are qualified to work at sea as an Officer, but it does provide access onto the next stage of the training programme.

Minimum entry requirements

To gain entry to the course you should have the following qualifications:

  • Three National 5 passes or equivalent including Maths, Physics, or Technological Studies, or equivalent.

  • If you have left school and acquired other life skills which don’t meet the qualifications above, you may be able to gain access through to recognised prior learning of your skills.

 

You'll be invited for a group and/or individual interview where you'll get the opportunity to find out more about the course and tell us why you're interested in this subject area.

 

What you study

You'll study a range of subjects which will develop your skills in a maritime context. The course will be delivered through a mix of classroom and practical sessions. You'll develop a range of skills and in subjects such as: 

  • Ship Construction and Stability.
  • Bridge Watchkeeping.
  • Engineering Dynamics.
  • Marine Engineering Practise.

 

After the course

Careers

If you want to go to sea as a Deck, or Engineering Officer:

  • All students starting a Deck, or Engineering Officer course must be sponsored by a shipping company, or training provider. We will arrange an interview for you with a training provider. If you are successful at interview you will be offered a place on the first year of the Scottish Professional Diploma leading to your first Certificate of Competency as a Deck, or Engineering Officer.
  • Prior to entry onto a Deck, or Engineering Trainee Officer Programme you will also have to pass a medical examination.
