City of Glasgow College is once again Number One for Skills in the UK with eight of its students winning medals at the 2017 UK Skills Show.

Over all the college took three gold medals, three silvers, two bronze and a highly commended. One of the gold medals was achieved for catering in the Inclusive Skills competition.

Principal and Chief Executive Paul Little said:

“This was a remarkable achievement and I’m delighted that the tremendous hard work of our students and lecturers has paid off with such a significant amount of medals to their credit.

“It really is fantastic for our world class college to be recognised in this way. At City of Glasgow College our top priority is to equip each and every one of our students with the hard and soft skills that they will need from day one, as they enter the world of work. This unique competition plays a vital role in raising industry standards and to be at the top of that league table shows just how brilliantly our college is doing in preparing our students to be the best in their chosen career.”

The winners were presented with their medals at a special ceremony to close UK Skills 2017 which took place at Birmingham’s NEC.  A record 80,000 spectators attended the three day event and watched up to 500 young people competing in over 55 disciplines.

Alex Dawson received a Highly Commended for Restaurant Service and Iain Hanna took Gold for Catering Entry Level 2 in the Inclusive Skills Competition.

The results mean that 11 competitors from Scotland have now secured a place in Squad UK for WorldSkills Kazan, Russia in 2019. Three of those students are from City of Glasgow College with eight from other Scottish colleges including Fife, Dundee & Angus and New College Lanarkshire.
