Student placements seal deal between college and industry

The partnership between City of Glasgow College and leading telecommunications specialist, Exchange Communications, has started in earnest with the first student placements now underway.

Mike McGregor is one of three students who secured work experience at the firm which sponsors the college’s Computer Networking programme at SCQF level 7 and 8.

Through the new partnership, Exchange provides unique industry insights for students through on-site work experience, guest speaker slots, and the donation of equipment.

Before starting his placement Mike was unsure about which path to follow after college. He explains:

“This experience really broadened my awareness of the routes open to me and I’ve been able to gain invaluable hands-on industry experience. The placement is a great opportunity to learn from the experts and see the practical application of your skills in the workplace.”

Speaking about the partnership, Exchange Communications’ Managing Director, Tom Sime said:

“We have been very impressed with Mike’s eagerness to get to work and we hope he’ll take back valuable practical learnings that will assist him in completing his studies.

“Our partnership with City of Glasgow College has the potential to attract talented young students like Mike towards a career in telecommunications. We’re looking forward to developing our relationship with the college further in the weeks and months ahead.”

Samir Zarrug, Head of Curriculum, Applied Computing Technology at City of Glasgow College, said:

"Mike was thrilled with the level of support and guidance he received from experts at Exchange Communications. We are delighted with this partnership and the valuable work experience it is offering to our students. It will undoubtedly accelerate practical learning and help our students prepare for future careers in computer networking.”

Mike’s fellow students Aidan Cheung and Xander Parle, who also gained placements with Exchange, will take up these in the New Year.
