Caera's story

Caera Kimmitt

Age: 21
Studied: Professional Diploma in Marine Engineering, Engineering Cadetship (2012-15)
Now: Second Engineer on-board a standby vessel in the North Sea

“College was a great experience for me! Studying Marine Engineering, the range of things we covered in such a short space of time was fantastic. We did firefighting, sea survival and medical courses - as well as spending a total of six months at sea!

I won two awards in my time at college. I won the 'Engineering Cadet of the Year award', as well as the 'Bevis Minter award', which was presented to me at the college's opening ceremony for the new Riverside Campus.

Since leaving college, I've worked on-board a standby vessel in the North Sea. It's a small vessel, there's only 12 of us, but I've found it incredible how supportive everyone has been - especially as we spend so much time away from home. A happy crew makes a happy ship. I enjoy every day of working because it's such a great atmosphere.

I recommend the college to everyone, it couldn't have been a better experience. The lecturers and staff were always on hand and tried to help as much as they could. They really prepared us for life at sea, sharing their own experiences by showing us pictures and telling us their stories.”
