Daniel's story

Daniel Rae

Age: 32
Studied: HND Multimedia Design and Production
Now: Social Media Manager at Dog (one of Scotland's largest creative agencies)

"Having a January birthday, I finished 6th year at school when I was around 17 and a half — I was pretty young for further education! But I found that the variety of the HND programme helped to keep my attention and to provide me with a broad yet detailed knowledge of a variety of aspects of digital production.

College staff and lecturers were friendly and approachable and this helped my transition from high school to an environment where you have to take more responsibility for your education. Away from studies, I particularly enjoyed getting breakfast and a few quick games of pool in the canteen before first class.

I learned a range of subjects, from programming in Java, web design, print design, multimedia production and JavaScript development to video editing and technical authorship. It was particularly nice to be able to produce digital and print work that could be added to your own portfolio of work.
Following the HND, I was admitted directly into third year of a degree course - BSc in Multimedia Technology at Glasgow Caledonian University - and I continued my studies there, graduating in 2004.

If I'm honest, I felt that after completing my degree, I was a Jack-of-all-trades and entry into my ideal career in web design wasn't straightforward. But with 11 years since graduating, I can look back and say honestly it really benefited my career."

I really enjoyed my time at college, particularly the variety of courses within the HND programme and the approachability of lecturers.
