Darren's story

Darren Seggie

Age: 27
Studied: HND in Professional Cookery
Now: In year three of BA in Hospitality Management at Edinburgh Napier, plus studying a TQFE through Dundee University with help from City of Glasgow College

“I already had the practical skills needed for the direction I was going in, but, because I'd been away from education for a long time, I needed more academic skills for further education. My experience at college helped me develop these skills and gain the discipline to undertake a degree. I really enjoyed the range of skills I learned, from bread making to financing a restaurant. The course had a good mix and taught me a lot of the fundamentals needed to succeed in the hospitality industry.

The college also helped me enter lots of competitions, where I was very successful. I won two prizes at ScotHot, and helped the college win the Craft Guilds Canape Competition at Buckingham Palace. I was also a Toque D’or Finalist, part of the team that won the Nations Cup 2015, and also won Student Showing Most Practical Potential 2014 and HND Year 2 Student of the Year 2015.

Entering these competitions also made me realise that the college is one of the most respected in the country. At each one, I discovered how well thought of it is — and with good reason. It's an extremely successful college with some of the most skilled lecturers in the country. They really go above and beyond to help their students' education.

Attending City of Glasgow College changed my life and gave me a fresh direction. They have allowed me to do things and go places I could never have imagined and I now hope to go on to teach professional cookery."
