Overview

This course gives you the skills you need to study Mechanical Engineering at an advanced level at college, or university. You'll study Higher level Maths and Physics, as well as introductory units in Mechanical Engineering.

The Access to Engineering course also covers a range of practical skills such as Communication, ICT, Statics, Dynamics and Thermofluids. In addition you'll complete a practical Engineering workshop skills unit. So if you're looking to take the first steps to becoming an engineer, this course could be for you.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

  • Three National 5 qualifications at Grade B or above including English, Mathematics and a Science subject; OR
  • Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

You'll be invited for a group and/or individual interview where you'll get the opportunity to find out more about the course and tell us why you're interested in this subject area.

 

 

What you study

You'll study:

  • Higher Maths and Higher Physics modules.
  • Mechanical Engineering units such as Thermofluids, Statics and Strength of Materials, Dynamics, Engineering Mathematics and CAD.
  • Core and practical skills in Communication, ICT and Engineering workshop skills.

 

After the course

Careers

This course will equip you to study advanced level mechanical engineering. After further study, including completion of an engineering degree, you can expect to enter a Graduate Engineer level position.

This course also allows entry into HNC/HND engineering courses at City of Glasgow College with potential employment opportunities in the Engineering and Manufacturing sector upon successful completion.

Successful students can progress on to:

After this course, you may be eligible for the Strathclyde University Engineering Academy degree programme. Successful completion of this course will allow you to apply for various universities undergraduate engineering programs.

You may also progress to the HND Mechanical Engineering programme at City of Glasgow College. On  successful completion, students with grade B passes meet the entry requirements for going into third year for some university courses.

The course is taught on a full time basis 22 hours per week at our Riverside Campus

Assessment methods

Assessment methods are both formal and practical. Use of summative and formative assessment methods are used throughout the course delivery.
