This 2-year course, approved by the MCA, is for applicants aspiring to be Deck Officers on board merchant ships. It's offered in collaboration with our international partners in India and Pakistan.

Your first year will be with our international partners with the second year at City of Glasgow College. There will be a phase at sea after which, you will return to the College to complete the OOW course.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

  • It is expected that those recruited onto the Nautical Science Cadetship programme will have entry qualifications equivalent to Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA) Highers that include Maths, Physics, Technological Studies, or another science-based subject all at Grade B or above.
  • English at IELTS 5.5 (from approved UKVI test centre).

The International Department of the City of Glasgow College can offer qualification matching services if required.

ESOL entry requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum ESOL Intermediate level 2 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher for HNC/D courses.

What you study

Phase 1 at overseas college:

  • Delivery of part 1 of the HND programme, inclusive of all assessment of individual modules.
  • Deliver basic seamanship training as prescribed by the college.
  • Deliver the following MCA approved STCW 2010 short courses:
  • Personal Survival Techniques.
  • Basic Fire Fighting.
  • Basic Sea Survival.
  • Elementary First Aid.
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibility.
  • Security Awareness.

Phase 2 at City of Glasgow College:

  • Delivery of part 2 of the HND programme, inclusive of all assessments.
  • Seagoing induction and introduction to the MNTB Training Record Book.

Phase 3 at sea:

  • Minimum 15 months approved deck sea service and completion of the MNTB Training Record Book (TRB) and associated Navigation and Operations Workbook.

Phase 4 at City of Glasgow College:

  • Preparation for OOW SQA Ship Stability and Navigation written exams.
  • Preparation for MCA OOW Orals examination.
  • STCW advanced safety courses.

After the course


This course prepares you for a career as a Senior Deck Officer, Ship Manager, or Ship Superintendent.
