Overview

This is an intensive course which has been specifically designed for serving Deck Officers holding an OOW Unlimited (STCW II/1) Certificate of Competency who wish to progress their qualifications to Chief Mates Unlimited (STCW II/1). The course will prepare you for the MCA Chief Mate Oral Examination.

Course Dates

The course runs a minimum of three times a year. The dates for 2020/21 are as follows:

  • 10th August 2020 - 4th September 2020.
  • 4th January 2021 - 29th January 2021.
  • 19th April 2021 - 14th May 2021.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

To qualify for the issue of UK Chief Mate unlimited, II/2, Certificate of Competency you must already hold a valid OOW unlimited, II/1, Certificate of Competency issued under the authority of an administration (Countries) whose Certificate of Competency (CoC) are accepted by MCA for the issue of a certificate of equivalent competency (CEC). Candidates holding a valid OOW unlimited CoC from any other country must have approval of acceptance from the MCA or an MCA issued NOE.

ESOL entry requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum ESOL Intermediate level 2 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher for HNC/D courses.

What you study

All the relevant topics from the syllabus as stipulated in MGN 69 for Chief Mate unlimited II/2

(The course does not include Human Element, Leadership & Management (HELM) or Medical Care on Board (MCOB) as standard, but these can be booked as optional extras. Please discuss this with us at time of booking).

After the course

Careers

The course will prepare you to sit the Chief Mates MCA Oral exam, leading to a Ch.Mates (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency, 

Progression to ships master's CoC after completion of the required sea time and success in the Master's Orals examination, or shore employment within the marine sector.

Continuing Study

Master's COC Unlimited on completion of the required sea time as stipulated by the MCA (Ref. MSN 1856).

Assessment methods

The College does not arrange your Oral Exam appointment, this is your responsibility to arrange directly with the MCA after obtaining your Notice of Eligibility. Assistance to apply for a Notice of Eligibility (NoE) can be provided as required.
