Overview

This course provides women with an introduction to the construction industry. During the course, you'll gain experience and knowledge in a variety of construction trades including bricklaying, carpentry & joinery, plastering and wall & floor tiling.

On successful completion of this course, you'll receive an Extended Certificate in Construction Skills at SCQF level 3.

This course runs for 6 months from January - June.

You will be offered placements by McTaggart Construction.

This course is placed on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework at Level 3.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

  • There are no formal entry qualifications but you should be interested in construction and be able to demonstrate this during the application process, as well as in the compulsory pre-course guidance sessions.

Additional selection requirements

You'll be invited for a group and/or individual interview where you can find out more about the course and tell us why you're interested in this subject area.  Where COVID restrictions are in place we will invite you to either a video meeting, telephone conference call or make an offer based on your application form.

ESOL entry requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum ESOL Intermediate level 2 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher for HNC/D courses.

What you study

You'll learn a range of hand skills and practical tasks in the following trade areas:

  • Bricklaying.
  • Carpentry and joinery.
  • Plastering.
  • Wall and floor tiling.

You'll also have the opportunity to develop skills in communication, numeracy and ICT.

After the course

Careers

You can expect to go on to work in the construction industry, after specialising in a trade.

Continuing study

You'll be able to apply for an SCQF Level 4 course in a number of trades after successfully completing the course.
