This course is suited to those who have completed an NPA in Carpentry and Joinery and would like to progress their skills further before applying for our NQ Carpentry and Joinery Level 6 course.

The course runs for 6 months from January - June.

On successful completion of this course, candidates will receive a Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery at SCQF Level 5.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

  • NPA Carpentry and Joinery at SCQF Level 5 or equivalent; OR
  • Relevant qualifications at National 5 level (technical)

You'll be invited for a group and/or individual interview where you can find out more about the course and tell us why you're interested in this subject area.  Where COVID restrictions are in place we will invite you to either a video meeting, telephone conference call or make an offer based on your application form.

ESOL entry requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum ESOL Intermediate level 2 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher for HNC/D courses.

  • Principles of Building Construction.
  • Set Up and Operate a Circular Saw.
  • Produce Setting Out Details for Bench Joinery.
  • Mark out Setting Out Details for Bench.
  • Manufacture Bench Joinery Products.

You can also develop your skills in communication, numeracy and ICT.

After the course


On successful completion of the course you will be better placed to progress to a career in the construction industry.


How the course is taught

This course will be delivered through blended learning with demonstrations, lectures and practical activities.

Assessment methods

Both practical and theory aspects of the course are assessed.
