Overview

Are you a beginner and want to learn the basics? Then the college certificate courses are for you. This short course will introduce you to the theory, principles and practice of keeping manual payroll records using Microsoft Excel.

Minimum entry requirements

You don’t need any formal qualifications or experience for this course.

What you study

  • Calculate gross pay from basic pay, including overtime, bonus and commission.
  • Calculate Statutory deductions such as Income Tax and National Insurance Contributions.
  • Calculate Statutory payments including Statutory Sick Pay (SSP), Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP), Statutory Paternity Pay (SPP) and Statutory Adoption Pay (SAP).
  • Complete a payroll summary and pay slips.

After the course

Careers

With experience and training, you could become an accounting technician and take on more complex work.

  • Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) level 6

These progression routes are subject to successful completion of a minimum of 3 Accounting College Certificate courses and a reference from your lecturer.

Teaching

How the course is taught

This course is delivered in the evening.  You will attend City of Glasgow College one evening per week from 6-9 pm. 

Learners will also be provided with additional learning resources to practice in their own time.  

Assessment methods

This course will be assessed through an open book assessment towards the end of the 12 weeks.
