Overview

Aimed at beginners, this is a fun introductory course which will start developing your creative and technical skills in digital and traditional comic art techniques. You'll explore comic projects from initial story ideas and sketchbook type drawing, through to finishing artwork ready for your own comic strip in a supportive environment.

The course is set within an open and friendly art studio environment and taught by experienced Scottish artist and lecturer Russell MacEwan who currently draws for Horrere Comics, Madius Comics, and Cabal Comics Group.

Minimum entry requirements

  • Enthusiasm for digital comic art.

What you study

  • Introduction to comic industry; styles and trends plus history.
  • Materials and media - traditional and digital.
  • Character development.
  • Scriptwriting for comics.
  • Page layout.
  • Speech bubbles and effects.
  • Produce a five page digital comic plus cover art.

After the course

Careers

Visual communication career routes or other routes including - film, gaming, and advertising: storyboard artist, art direction, concept artist, writer.

Continuing Study

  • More advanced evening class or progression to NC or HN.
  • Media, Art, or Professional writing at the college.

The workshops are delivered in an informal and supportive way by our highly experienced staff, who are artists, photographers, designers and makers.
