The HNC Accounting Award has been designed to meet the demands and requirements of the Accounting Industry.  Opportunities are provided to develop your skills, knowledge and understanding in preparation for employment, or for progression to courses such as AAT level 8 or HND Accounting.  Further details of the topics covered is provided in the section “What you Study” below. 

You will be assessed throughout this course with the assessments taking the form of practical assessments, assignment and case studies.  Towards the end of your course, you will undertake a Graded Unit examination, which is designed to assess your ability to integrate the knowledge and skills gained through the mandatory units. 


  • You will be required to attend college 1 day per week (Tuesday) from 9am to 5pm for two academic years.   
  • There is also the option to attend two days per week and complete the course in one year (Fast track, attendance on Tuesday and Thursday).  
  • The cost shown is for year one of the course only.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

  • One relevant* Higher at Grade C or above; OR
  • Three relevant National 5 courses at Grade A; OR
  • Successful completion of an NC/NQ** with a minimum of 12 credits OR
  • Relevant work experience will be considered where employer referee details have been supplied.
  • Equivalent qualifications will be considered.  

*Qualifications cannot include any from the following list: Art and Design, Design and Manufacture, Drama, Graphic Communications, Health and Food Technology, Languages, Music, Media, Photography, and Physical Education.

**Internal applicants must complete 16 credits undertaken in the NC/NQ qualification.

What you study

The mandatory units are:

  • Recording Financial Information (year 1).
  • Preparing Final Accounts (year 1).
  • Using Financial Accounting Software (year 1).
  • Cost Accounting (year 2).
  • Management Accounting Using IT (year 2).
  • Group Award Graded Unit (year 2).

Other units part-time students will study to bring their total credits up to 12 are:

  • Payroll (year 1).
  • IT in Business Spreadsheets (year 1).
  • Mathematics for Business (year 2).

After the course


This course prepares you for a career in:

Bookkeeping; Financial and/or Management Accounting; Accounts Technician; Assistant Accountant; Accounts Supervisor; Financial Reporting; Taxation.

Continuing Study

Successful students can progress to HND Accounting* or AAT Level 8 Advanced Diploma

* Students progressing to HND Accounting year 2 will be required to study 18 credits in one academic year (a total of 30 credits is required to achieve HND Accounting).  It should also be noted that this qualification is not available to study part-time.
