This course is a technician level qualification that will provide you with the basics you'll need to enter into a career in the Built Environment. During the course you'll:

  • Develop your technical knowledge and understanding.
  • Have the opportunity to develop and apply your critical reasoning and analysis skills to solve construction problems, using current industry standards and by applying contemporary industry techniques.
  • Develop your personal and business skills.

The course is a great way into a career in the Construction Industry. It's also an ideal course for those who want to pursue a technician level career in the industry, but haven't yet chosen a specialism.

On completing the course, you can progress straight to the second year HND programme without having to do any extra units.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

  • One Higher at Grade C or above including Mathematics or a Science subject; OR
  • National Qualification at SCQF level 6 in Built Environment; OR
  • Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

After the course


You might work as a Technician, or Junior Manager in the built environment and construction sector – architectural technology, quantity surveying, estimating, building surveying and construction management.

Successful students can progress on to:

After successful completion of this course, you'll be offered preferential progression on to the second year of the College's four construction related HND programmes (Architectural Technology, Building Surveying, Construction Management and Quantity Surveying), or you can use your qualification to access other advanced Construction Industry programmes at a number of colleges and universities across the UK.
