This course includes both traditional and innovative art practices. It gives you a broad visual education in contemporary art practice.

You'll develop your skills in a range of specialist disciplines and increase your awareness and knowledge of conceptual thinking. It also gives you the opportunity to develop and strengthen a portfolio of artwork.

You will be awarded an HNC in Contemporary Art Practice on successful completion of this course and will have enough credit points to continue on to 2nd year of an HND course.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

  • Higher Art and Higher English at Grade C or above AND two National 4 qualifications; OR
  • NQ Art and Design; OR
  • Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

Additional selection requirements

  • You'll be invited for a group and/or individual portfolio event where you can find out more about the course and tell us why you're interested in this subject. On the day you'll also be asked to submit a portfolio of your art and design work for assessment and may be given a short interview.

ESOL entry requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum ESOL Intermediate level 2 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher for HNC/D courses.

After the course


This course prepares you for work as an independent exhibiting artist, depending on the calibre of your work, your motivation and self-promotion skills.

Continuing Study

Successful students will be encouraged to continue their education by applying for the HND (2nd Year) in Fine Art/ Contemporary Art Practice.

You might also apply for art school or university degree courses, such as the BA (Hons) Contemporary Art Practice, delivered jointly by City of Glasgow College and the University of the West of Scotland.
