  • Overview

    On this one-year web-based creative computing course, you will gain skills to start or advance a career as a web designer.

    You'll learn how to build a range of websites using a variety of modern techniques that deliver content in a variety of formats for computers, smartphones and tablets.

    Beginning with the fundamentals of website development, you'll build on a foundation of client-side technologies and techniques (HTML5, CSS and SEO) through to more advanced study on topics such as CSS responsive grids layout, native JavaScript, JavaScript libraries, PHP and MySQL. You will gain skills in graphics, UX, interface design, Content Management Systems (WordPress), team working and web development.

    The course introduces you to both client and server side technologies with opportunities to prepare and develop web interfaces and media-rich content incorporating Photoshop and Illustrator and a range of other creative software applications. The faculty has access to the full Adobe suite which can be utilised to produce creative and engaging media content for inclusion within your websites.

    There are opportunities to enter the WorldSkills UK Web Design competition, develop employability skills by team working and there may be opportunities to get involved with real clients and web projects.

    Entry requirements

    Minimum entry requirements

    • One Higher at Grade C or above in a relevant* subject AND three National 5 qualifications at Grade C or above including Computing, Graphic Design or Information Systems; OR
    • National Qualification at SCQF level 5 or 6 in a relevant subject such as Digital Media Computing, Computing: Technical Support or Software Development; OR
    • Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

    *relevant subjects include Computing, Information Systems, Mathematics or Physics.

    ESOL entry requirements

    Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum ESOL Intermediate level 2 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher for HNC/D courses.

    You can apply for the HND Digital Design and Development (year 2) or if suitable HND Web Development.​
