    This course is a 12 credit HNC in Hospitality covering a range of related subjects, both practical and theoretical. This course provides you with a valuable qualification for employment in an exciting, vibrant and ever-changing industry. Hospitality is a growth sector of industry both locally and internationally.  There are many varied opportunities for students after completing their HNC in hotels, restaurants, bars, clubs contract catering and events.  You may want to continue with your studies and the HNC allows you to articulate to HND Hospitality Management second year.

    This course runs for 6 months from January - June.

    Entry requirements

    Minimum entry requirements

    • One Higher at Grade C or above; OR
    • National Qualification at SCQF level 6 in Hospitality; OR
    • Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

    You'll be invited for a group and/or individual interview where you can find out more about the course and tell us why you're interested in this subject area.  Where COVID restrictions are in place we will invite you to either a video meeting, telephone conference call or make an offer based on your application form.

    ESOL entry requirements

    Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum ESOL Intermediate level 2 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher for HNC/D courses.

    We also offer students a variety of paid work placements in some of Glasgow’s top establishments, which you can apply for in January once you've been accepted on the course.

    After the course

    Careers

    This course prepares you for a career at an operational or supervisory level in the hospitality department of a hotel, a restaurant or bar, or directly into a graduate training scheme with larger organisations. We work with key representatives from the industry to offer graduate training positions following the successful completion of the HNC.

    Continuing Study

    When you have completed your HNC Hospitality, you can progress to the second year of the HND Hospitality Management programme at the college.  You will have to complete three extra credits to be awarded you HND Hospitality Management however, this is achievable in the second year. 

    You may wish to leave with your HNC Hospitality and apply for first year of a university programme in the same specialism.  Universities that offer Hospitality Management degrees included Edinburgh Napier University, Strathclyde University, Edinburgh Queen Margaret University and Robert Gordon University Aberdeen. 

     

    Teaching

    How the course is taught

    During the coronavirus pandemic, all theory classes will be delivered online.

    The course is taught through both practical and theoretical classes, which include demonstrations, group activities, case studies and practical work in our commercial restaurant Scholars'.

    Assessment methods

    The course uses a variery of assessment methods including class-based assessments for theoretical and practical subjects, as well as project-based assessments to complete in your own time at home.

    Materials

    All teaching and learning materials are held on our Virtual Learning Environment or within our library. 

    Dress code

    You will be expected to purchase a uniforma for our practical teaching areas. These areas include the Front of House area in our Scholar's restaurant and the training kitchens in our Professional Cookery department.  Information on what and where to purchase these items will be given when you are offered a place on the course and further help will be given at Induction.
