Overview

Mechatronics is an interdisciplinary area of engineering that combines mechanical and electrical engineering with computer science. A typical mechatronic system picks up signals from the environment, processes them to generate output signals, transforming them for example into forces, motions and actions.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

  • Two Highers at Grade C or above including Mathematics and Physics or Computing Science; OR
  • National Certificate Group Award in Engineering, Electronics or Electrical Engineering at SCQF level 6; OR
  • Qualification comparable to the above, gained through other awarding bodies such as GSCE, City & Guilds, Edexcel etc.

Additional selection requirements

  • You will be required to attend an advice session and one-to-one interview at the college before an offer of a place will be made.

After the course

Careers

The qualification provides candidates with a relevant mix of competencies enabling immediate entry to employment or articulation to degree level study. The HNC in Mechatronics Group Award enables articulation to part time or full time degree courses in Scotland or elsewhere in the UK.

Continuing study

Successful students can progress on to:

The qualification in Mechatronics is designed to equip candidates with the knowledge, understanding and skills required for success in current and future employment or for progression to further academic and/or professional qualifications.

Teaching

How the course is taught

The course will be taught in two 18 week blocks with class sessions of two hours duration. You will also be required to work by self-study outwith timetabled class contact and arrange lab entry for additional practical activities out with timetabled class contact within course study groups.

Assessment methods

Each unit will have a minimum of one learning outcome end of unit assessment which may also include a practical element. Some units have more than one learning outcome assessment which will be delivered within the time frame of the unit.
HNC Mechatronics candidates will also undertake a 1 Credit Graded Unit at SCQF level 7. This will be in the form of a 3 hour written examination normally at the end of May of each year.

Additional Information

Materials

You will be asked to supply your own copy of recommended course books.
You will have to supply your own writing and drawing materials along with a scientific calculator.
