The HNC Mechatronics Industrial Automation Engineering with Robotics is a course that brings together the main aspects of today’s modern process and engineering control systems requirements. The course looks at and develops your understanding of automated and robotic systems through electrical, mechanical and electronic units showing how these individual engineering areas are interfaced together with computing software to form interactive and complex production systems.

This part-time course is taught one day a week for 2 years.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

  • Two Highers at Grade C or above including Mathematics and Physics or Computing Science; OR
  • National Certificate Group Award in Engineering, Electronics or Electrical Engineering at SCQF level 6; OR
  • Qualification comparable to the above gained through other awarding bodies such as GSCE, City & Guilds, Edexcel etc.

Additional selection requirements

  • You'll be invited for a group and/or individual interview where you can find out more about the course and tell us why you're interested in this subject area

What you study

Some of the units that you will study are

  • Communication: Practical Skills.
  • Engineering Mathematics 1.
  • Mechatronic Systems Elements.
  • Mechatronic Systems.
  • Interfacing Electronics.
  • Electrical Engineering Principles 1.
  • Engineering Principles.
  • Computer-Aided Draughting for Engineers.
  • Robotics and Animatronics: An Introduction.

After the course

The qualification in Industrial Automation Engineering with Robotics is designed to equip you with the knowledge, understanding and skills required for success in current and future employment or for progression to further academic and/or professional qualifications.

Continuing Study

The qualification will provide you with a relevant mix of competencies enabling progression to employment or articulation to higher level study. The HNC in Mechatronics Group Award enables articulation to the HND Mechatronic Advanced Industrial Automation Engineering at City of Glasgow College or to part-time or full-time degree courses in Scotland or elsewhere in the UK.

How the course is taught

The course will be taught in two 18 week blocks with class sessions of two hours duration. You will also be required to undertake self-study outwith timetabled class contact and arrange lab entry for additional practical activities out with timetabled class contact within course study groups.

Assessment methods

Each unit will have a minimum of one learning outcome end of unit assessment which may also include a practical element. Some units have more than one learning outcome assessment which will be delivered within the timeframe of the unit.

You will also undertake a 1 credit HNC Mechatronic Graded Unit at SCQF level 7. This will be in the form of a 3 hour written examination normally at the end of May in year 2.

Additional Information

You will be asked to supply your own copy of recommended course books.  You will have to supply your own writing and drawing materials along with a scientific calculator.
