  • Overview

    This course provides the training and qualifications necessary for employment in the Merchant Navy as a Deck Officer of the Watch.

    The course is split into five phases which consist of time in college studying towards your academic qualification and time at sea undertaking work-based learning.

    The course will take approximately 3 years to complete. 

    On successful completion of the course, you will have an HNC Nautical Science and your OOW Certificate of Competency (Unlimited). 

    Entry requirements

    Minimum entry requirements

    • Shipping company sponsorship (initially applications should be made to a shipping company or training provider); AND
    • Three National 5 level passes (including Maths, Physics or Technological Studies) or equivalent.

    ESOL entry requirements

    Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum ESOL Intermediate level 2 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher for HNC/D courses.

    What you study

    The breakdown of the course is as follows:

    Phase 1 – College Phase.

    During the first college phase you will gain a thorough introduction to the maritime industry as you complete an NC in Shipping and Maritime Operations. You will study a range of subjects as well as gaining practical seamanship skills.  In addition you will complete the mandatory STCW safety training course required before you go to sea for the first time.

    Phase 2 – Sea Phase.

    During your first phase at sea you will start your work based learning in the form of the Merchant Navy Training Board, Training Record Book.

    Phase 3 – College Phase.

    On your return to college you will study the underpinning  knowledge for your first Certificate of Competency by completing an HNC in Nautical Science. You will also complete mandatory courses in GMDSS and Medical First Aid.

    Phase 4 – Sea Phase.

    You require a total of 12 months sea time before you can gain your first Certificate of Competency. In this sea phase you will make up the reminder of your sea time as well as completing your Training Record Book.

    Phase 5 – College Phase.

    Your final college phase prepares you for your first Certificate of Competency. You will sit two written examinations, one for Navigation and one for Ship Stability as well as preparing for the MCA Oral examination.  On successful completion of the course you will be awarded an Officer of the Watch (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency and an HNC Nautical Science.
