Overview

The COGC offers a full MNTB approved Deck Officer Cadet Training programme by a Higher National Certificate (HNC) route, leading to the award of a UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) Deck Officer’s Certificate of Competency (STCW’95 II/I OOW), and the Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Nautical Science.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

To gain entry to the course you should have any of the following combinations of qualifications:

  • National 5/GCSE or equivalent which must include: English, Maths, Physical Science (e.g. Physics/Chemistry/Technological Studies/Engineering Science) and one other subject
  • NC Shipping and Maritime Operations (SCQF level 6) without optional Engineering Units.
  • Alternative qualifications will be considered on an individual basis in conjunction with the sponsoring company or training provider.

Additional selection requirements

Students must have a sponsoring company in order to fulfil the sea time requirement of this programme.

After the course

Careers

This course prepares you for a career as a Merchant Navy Deck Officer or shore-based employment in the shipping industry. You could apply for our higher level Deck Officer or Master Mariner qualifications, or a degree in maritime studies with various institutions.

Cadets are expected to wear nice and clean uniform which will be provided by their training providers.
