This course introduces and develops the skills and knowledge you’ll need for a career in sports coaching. The principles of good coaching practice are examined and a wide practical and theoretical knowledge of games and sports is developed (please see further information in the 'what you study' section below).

You'll be taught by sports coaching staff with significant industry experience and a proven track record of bringing out the best in their students.

This course accepts direct entrants to year two. On successful completion of this course, you'll be awarded the HND in Coaching and Developing Sport.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

Year one entry:

  • Two Highers at Grade C or above including English (or Modern Studies, History, Geography, Media Studies); OR
  • NQ/NC qualification at SCQF level 6 in a Sports related subject; OR
  • Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

Year two entry:

  • An HNC Sport Coaching qualification with 15 credits.  This ensures you do not need to study additional units to complete the 30 credits in the second year.

Additional selection requirements

  • You’ll be invited for a group and/or individual interview where you’ll get the opportunity to find out more about the course and tell us why you’re interested in this subject area.
  • You will also be expected to participate in a practical section of the interview where you will be asked to participate in a selection of short fitness tests and lead on a 5 min skill/game related practice that you will have to prepare prior to the day.

ESOL entry requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum ESOL Intermediate level 2 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher for HNC/D courses.

Continuing Study

On successful completion of the course, you can progress to:

  • Second or third year of BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching at University of the West of Scotland.​
