  • Overview

This exciting architectural design-led course links with contemporary architectural practice through a mix of; design studio, innovative construction technology, architectural history, modelmaking, sketching, 2d cad drawings, 3d cad visualisation models, and BIM professional practice units. The HNC first year design project briefs include a garden studio, a bothy, a rural house, and a tiny house prototype for a Social Bite Village for the homeless.

The Climate Emergency is embedded in the curriculum and the Social Bite Village proposals follow 9 environmental design principles integrated into the project brief to create sustainable solutions that address the net zero carbon Scotland 2045 ambition; follow passive design principles, use sustainable materials, select off-site construction methods, integrate renewable technologies, involve the community, create community gardens, encourage biodiversity, connect with green transport, and create a variety of greenspaces.

The HND second year has a strong focus on architectural technology; exploring the application of Building Information Modelling, developing 3D cad visualisation skills, and broaden the depth of appreciation for construction technology detailing based on commercial building types. These all blend to form a core foundation of knowledge centred on the design of an applied arts and building craft campus.
