This course is designed to enable you to reach the highest qualifications held in Make-up Artistry in Scotland. With the fast-moving and growing industry this course will equip you with specialised skills, expanding creativity and artistic skills unique to a make-up artist.  

You will be taught by a team of industry experts with a wealth of industry experience and expertise in make-up counters, film, theatre and fashion photoshoots.  Their expertise will ensure your learning is at the centre of their teaching practice.

An essential aspect of the course is working in industry alongside, meeting and observing Make-up Artists working in the field. You may have the opportunity to take part in competitions and industry shows allowing you to flourish as a student of City of Glasgow College.  

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

  • National Qualification at SCQF level 6 Make-Up Artistry; OR
  • SCQF level 6 or SVQ level 3 Ladies Hairdressing; OR
  • NCGA level 6 in Beauty Care; OR
  • Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

Entry to the course is based on you:-

  • Meeting the entry requirements of your course and
  • Attending a course information session.

What you study

You'll study the following core units:-

  • Make-up Artistry: Continuity, Cutting and Colouring Techniques for Production.
  • Make-up Artistry: Maintenance and Styling of Postiche.
  • Make-up Artistry: Period Make-up and Hairstyles.
  • Make-up Artistry: Special Effects.
  • Make-up Artistry: Character Make-up.
  • Make-up Artistry: Production Study.
  • Make-up Artistry: Graded Unit 2.

Additional units will be included to make up the full group award to gain your qualification at HND Level.

After the course


You may consider career prospects in theatre, film, freelance make-up artist, working on make-up counters, fashion and editorial for photographers.

Continuing Study

This is the highest qualification held in the area of make-up artistry. You could progress onto degree level in England. You may also consider a career in teaching in Further Education and TQFE via Stirling or Dundee University.


How the course is taught

The course is taught over 3 blocks entailing 12 weeks.  You will be continually assessed throughout the course.

Assessment methods

There will be a variety of assessment methods used including practical, closed book and portfolio building.

Additional Information


You are required to supply your own kit.  The college will supply aspects of materials with regards to hair pieces, wigs and special effect products.  In addition, you are expected to supply your own stationery.  More information will be given at interview.
