This 2 year course, approved by the MCA, is for applicants aspiring to be Marine Engineer Officers on board merchant ships. It's offered in collaboration with our international partners in India and Pakistan.

Your first year will be with our international partners with the second year at City of Glasgow College. There will be a phase at sea after which, you will return to the College to complete the EOOW courses.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

  • It is expected that those recruited onto the Marine Engineering Cadetship programme will have entry qualifications equivalent to Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA) Highers that include Maths, Physics, Technological Studies, or another science-based subject all at level B or above.
  • IELTS at 5.5.
  • The International Department of the City of Glasgow College can offer qualification matching services if required.

Phase one at Overseas College:

  • Marine heat engine principles.
  • Auxiliary thermodynamic principles.
  • Dynamics and machines.
  • Statics and strength of materials.
  • Propulsion.
  • Maths.
  • Naval architecture.
  • Ship construction.

Phase two at City of Glasgow College:

  • Advanced marine thermodynamic principles.
  • Advanced marine heat engine principles.
  • Advanced applied mechanics.
  • Advanced strength of materials.
  • Advanced naval architecture.
  • Advanced ship construction and survey.

Phase three at Sea:

  • MNTB training record book.

Phase four at City of Glasgow College:

  • Preparation for IAMI marine engineering knowledge written examinations.
  • Preparation for STCW engineer Officer of the Watch orals examination.
  • STCW advanced safety courses.

After the course


This course prepares you for a career as a Senior Marine Engineering Officer, Ship Manager, or Ship Superintendent.

Continuing Study

On successful completion of this course, you may be able to apply for entry to the second year of a four years honours course at university.
