Overview

This exciting and challenging course provides you with the skills knowledge and understanding for a career within the dynamic and ever-changing world of retail.

This course provides the foundation necessary to fill trainee management positions or run your own small retail business. It covers all aspects of the retail environment including Stock Presentation, Customer Care, Fashion Merchandising, Buying, Visual Merchandising and Consumer Behaviour. You'll also have the opportunity to develop your digital communication skills.

Your course lecturers will bring their individual background knowledge and experience of the retail industry to the classroom environment in order to enhance and improve your learning experience. Methods of teaching will include case studies reflecting real life retail scenarios, group discussion, projects, visits and guest speakers.

In 2nd year, you'll have the opportunity to enjoy a work placement with leading retailers e.g., New Look, House of Fraser, Schuh, Tesco, River Island, Matalan, M & Co and Marks and Spencer.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

  • Two Highers at Grade C or above in relevant* subjects; OR
  • NC or NQ qualification at SCQF level 6 in a relevant business subject; OR
  • Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

* relevant subjects include English, Business Management, Economics, History, Mathematics, Media or a Science subject.

After the course

Careers

This course prepares you for a career in retail at a supervisory, or management level.  Previous students have successfully gained employment with such diverse retailers as House of Fraser, Michael Kors, Marks and Spencer and New Look.

Teaching

How the course is taught

You'll be taught using a wide range of inventive and stimulating learning methods to ensure your engagement and learning experiences are relevant.  There are work placements, employer visits and events plus professional retail speakers to develop essential work ready skills.  The course also addresses current retail theories and practice to prepare you for university.

Assessment methods

A wide range of continuous assessment methods will be employed by open/closed book assessments, case studies, reports & presentations.
