Overview
This course is for anyone looking to start their career in the Maritime Industry. It will introduce you to a range of topics and provide a background into how the Industry is regulated and the functions of the business ashore and at sea.
The course incorporates both the SQA NC Shipping and Maritime Operations and the HNC Nautical Science. The course is fully approved by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and the Merchant Navy Training Board.
All students must be sponsored by various shipping companies or training agencies, who provide the sea phases on ships operating worldwide.
This course is placed on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework at Level 6.
This course is an ideal introduction if you want to:
•Work at sea as a Deck Officer.
•Work at sea as an Engineer Officer.
•Work in a ship management company.
•Work in port operations.
Successful completion of this course does not mean you are qualified to work at sea as an Officer, but it does provide access onto the next stage of the training programme.

Entry requirements
Minimum entry requirements
To gain entry to the course you should have the following qualifications:
•Three National 5 passes or equivalent including Maths, Physics, or Technological Studies, or equivalent.
•If you have left school and acquired other life skills which don’t meet the qualifications above, you may be able to gain access through to recognise prior learning of your skills.
Additional selection requirements
In order to access this course you must be sponsored by a shipping company or training provider. Prior to entry onto a Deck Officer Programme you will also have to pass a medical examination.
ESOL entry requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum ESOL Intermediate level 2 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher for HNC/D courses.What you study
You'll study a range of subjects which will develop your skills in a maritime context. The course will be delivered through a mix of classroom and practical sessions. You'll develop a range of skills and in subjects such as:
• Ship Construction and Stability.
• Bridge Watchkeeping.
• Shipboard Operations: An Introduction
• Maritime Industry: An Introduction
• Nautical Science: An Introduction
• Safety training of Seafarers
After the course
Careers
After the course you will be working onboard your sponsoring company ships as Deck Cadet and complete your Deck Cadet Training Programme by a Higher National Certificate (HNC) route, leading ultimately to the award of a UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) Deck Officer’s Certificate of Competency (STCW’95 II/I OOW), and the Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Nautical Science.

After the course you will be working for your sponsoring company ship as Deck cadet and complete your Deck Cadet Training Programme by a Higher National Certificate (HNC) route, leading ultimately to the award of a UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) Deck Officer’s Certificate of Competency (STCW’95 II/I OOW), and the Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Nautical Science.
If you want you can choose further apply for HND Nautical Science programme. After HND Nautical Science, you will be eligible to apply for 2nd or 3rd year entry to main degree programmes at higher education institutions.
