This is a vocational qualification giving you practical opportunities for developing real skills that are valid and relevant in the Building and Engineering Services sector. 

You will gain a wide range of skills, practices and knowledge across a range of subject areas including Plumbing and Electrical operations, Energy and the Environment, Science and Health and Safety. 

It will also better prepare you for a career in the Building Services Engineering sector and allow you to make an informed choice about the most appropriate career option.

On successful completion you'll receive a National Progression Award from the Scottish Qualification Authority; this is a recognised National Qualification in the Building Services Engineering sector.

This course is offered twice a year

  • August - December 2019.
  • January - June 2020.

This course is placed on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework at Level 5.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

You must demonstrate an interest in Building Services Engineering and have the following:

  • Two National 4 level qualifications, preferably in English, Maths or Physics; OR
  • Relevant industry experience.

  • You'll be invited to undertake a pre-course assessment and then attend a group and/or individual interview where you can find out more about the course and tell us why you're interested in this subject.

  • Systems, Roles, Responsibilities and Procedures.
  • Health and Safety.

After the course


This course will help prepare you for a career in the Building Services Engineering Sector.

Continuing study

There may be the opportunity to progress onto other National Qualification courses.


How the course is taught

The course contains practical and theoretical aspects and will be delivered in a workshop and classroom environment.

Assessment methods

You will be assessed on your practical ability and knowledge of the subject area through practical and written assessments.
