    This course gives you an introduction to the basic principles of 3D design. You’ll gain a foundation in the creative, research, technical and analytical skills required for the specialist areas of Product Design and Modelmaking.

    The course is taught by creative tutors with many years of experience in art and 3D Design. You have the opportunity to prepare a professional design portfolio that can be used to progress your career in the creative industries. You’ll also be encouraged to think about the way people live as well as the social, cultural and technical factors that influence the 3D Design industry.

    The course attracts a diverse group of learners from younger students moving on from school as well as those returning to education. This is a practical project-based course where you'll use your creativity and knowledge to work on a range of product design briefs using 2D and 3D processes including Computer Assisted Drawing programmes.

    This course is placed on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework at Level 6.

    Entry requirements

    Minimum entry requirements

    • National 5 Art and Design and National 5 English at Grade C or above; OR
    • Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

    Additional selection requirements

    • You'll be invited for a group and/or individual interview where you can find out more about the course and tell us why you're interested in this subject area. Where COVID restrictions are in place we will invite you to either a video meeting, telephone conference call or make an offer based on your application form.

    • You’ll be asked to provide examples of your art and design work.

    ESOL entry requirements

    Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum ESOL Intermediate level 2 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher for HNC/D courses.

    What you study

    As part of your course, you will learn 2D and 3D professional Computer-Aided Drawing programs.

    You'll design products such as:

    • Promotional Items.
    • Furniture.
    • Public Art.
    • Recycling Materials.

    You'll also develop core skills in:

    • Numeracy.
    • Working with Others.

    Entry-level positions in the industry.

    Continuing Study

    You can go on to apply for an HND level course at the college such as 3D Design: Product Design or Modelmaking there is also an opportunity to apply to other related disciplines, eg furniture design


    How the course is taught

    The course will be delivered using a blended learning model.

    You will learn through a mixture of face-to-face and online teaching, using the college virtual learning environment (VLE).

    Practical elements of the course will continue where possible to be delivered on campus in specialist rooms and workshops. Activity on campus will be in smaller focused groups within safe working environments. You should expect to be in the college for part of the week.

    Remote (online) learning will be used for subjects that are more suited to this type of teaching. Students will need access to a computer or device for this type of learning and access to the internet*. Resources and learning materials will all be available through the VLE although this will still be tutor-led.

    *Students with no access to a computer or wifi at home will be given alternative options to allow online studying to be possible.
