Overview
This course provides an introduction to both Financial and Management Accounting and gives sufficient training in accounting procedures and techniques to enable you to progress further academically or to be equipped sufficiently to attempt clerical level types of employment in an accounting environment.
Further details of the topics covered are provided in the section “What you Study” below.
You'll be assessed continuously throughout this course with the assessments taking the form of practical assessments, assignment and case studies. There is no final examination.
You'll undertake a programme of guidance activities designed to help you make the most of your qualifications and college experience.
You'll be required to attend college on 3 days every week from 9am to 5pm.
This course is placed on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework at Level 6.
Entry requirements
Minimum entry requirements
- Four National 5 qualifications at Grade C or above including English and a numeracy based subject; OR
- Relevant Foundation Apprenticeship qualification; OR
- NQ in Business, Accounting at SCQF level 4/5; OR
- Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

ESOL entry requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum ESOL Intermediate level 2 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher for HNC/D courses.What you study

Teaching
How the course is taught
This course is classroom-based and attendance is vital or important content will be missed. You are timetabled for approximately 19 hours a week, over 4 days. An additional 16 hours should be allowed for studying out with class time in order to be successful.
You will complete practical assignments based on a variety of case studies. There will also be an element of report writing to demonstrate the ability to explain and analyse financial information.
Resources are provided to enable you to revise classroom learning in your own time.
You will be required to use IT to complete some of the units. You should ensure that you possess a basic level of IT in Microsoft Office including Word and Excel.
