    This highly successful foundation course allows you to build a creative portfolio of art, graphic design and illustration projects. The course can lead to further study on a variety of HND level courses. You'll learn to research effectively and work creatively from sketchbook through the design process to finished work, all of which is continuously assessed.

    This stimulating and creative course will be delivered to you by our highly professional teaching staff with significant Art and Design experience and a proven track record of bringing out the best in their students. 

    It is expected that this course will be delivered in a blended approach, both in the studio and online unless the situation around COVID-19 significantly improves, in which case there will be more time on campus.

    The course is placed on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework at Level 6. 

    Entry requirements

    Minimum entry requirements

    • National 5 Art and Design and National 5 English at Grade C or above; OR
    • Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

    Additional selection requirements

    • You'll be invited for a group and/or individual interview where you can find out more about the course and tell us why you're interested in this subject area.  Where COVID restrictions are in place we will invite you to either a video meeting, telephone conference call or make an offer based on your application form.
    • You’ll be asked to provide examples of your art and design work - Portfolio Information.

    ESOL entry requirements

    Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum ESOL Intermediate level 2 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher for HNC/D courses.

    What you study

    Emphasis is on research, development of ideas and experimentation of media. You'll gain a thorough understanding of the design process.

    You'll work on graphics projects exploring:

    • Drawing.
    • Media & Illustration.
    • Sketchbook Development.
    • Creative Thinking.
    • Page Layout.
    • Advertising.
    • Corporate Identity.
    • Digital Imaging.

    After the course


    The course is an opportunity to build a portfolio to move onto further study.
