    This course offers ideal preparation for work or entry to a higher-level software development course. Using a balance of theory and practice, you’ll learn the key concepts of software design.

    So whether employment or progression to university is your aim, we'll give you the basic knowledge needed for this growing area of computing.

    This course is placed on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework at Level 6. 

    Entry requirements

    Minimum entry requirements

    • Three National 5 qualifications at Grade C or above including English and Mathematics or Numeracy; OR 
    • Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

    You'll be invited for a group and/or individual interview where you can find out more about the course and tell us why you're interested in this subject area.  Where COVID restrictions are in place we will invite you to either a video meeting, telephone conference call or make an offer based on your application form.

    ESOL entry requirements

    Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum ESOL Intermediate level 2 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher for HNC/D courses.

    • Designing and Creating Relational Databases (SQL).
    • Test Software Components.
    • Core Skills (numeracy and communication).
    • IT Productivity Packages (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations).
    • Troubleshooting PC Systems.
    • Developing Websites.

    Careers

    This course prepares you for a junior or trainee position or Modern Apprenticeship in ICT within a computing company.

    Continuing Study

    To progress to HNC Computing course you should have successfully completed all units, have good attendance and a good reference from your lecturers.
