Overview

The Hospitality Industry offers exciting career opportunities within hotels, bars and restaurants both nationally and internationally. This course will provide you with the practical skills and detailed theoretical knowledge required to undertake a variety of job roles within this industry as well as entry to higher level Hospitality and related courses.

You will study subjects associated with restaurant and bar service, accommodation and reception operations as well as essential knowledge for operating a business. As a team member, you will work within Scholars’ Restaurant one of the college’s commercial outlets to develop your practical skills in Customer Care and Food and Beverage Service.

The course is delivered by our highly skilled lecturing staff who have a vast amount of relevant industry experience to inspire your learning.

This course runs for 6 months from January - June 2020.

This course is placed on the Scottish Credit Qualification Framework at level 6.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

  • Three National 5 qualifications at grade C or above (minimum English and Maths at National 4); OR
  • NQ/NC Hospitality at SCQF level 5; OR
  • Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

Careers

This course prepares you for a career as a food and beverage server, receptionist, room attendant, and barista in the Hospitality Industry.

Continuing study

You can apply for the HNC or HND Hospitality Management courses on successful completion of this course.

Teaching

How the course is taught

The course is taught through both practical and theoretical classes, which include demonstrations, group activities, case studies, and practically based classes in our renowned commercial restaurant - Scholars’.

Assessment methods

You will be assessed on an on-going basis using a variety of methods such as presentations, closed book assessments, reports, case studies, projects as well as practical observations.

Additional Information

Dress code

You will be provided with a uniform for the food service elements of the course in Scholars’ Restaurant. For these practical classes, your uniform must be worn with appropriate footwear. Long hair must be tied back, no jewellery on hands or arms, and nails must be short and unvarnished.
