Overview
This is an exciting course, which provides you with the skills and knowledge necessary to gain employment in the hospitality/events industry. This NQ Hotel, Restaurant and Bar Operations course focuses on developing your practical skills for the hospitality/events industry e.g. food and beverage service, front office, customer care, housekeeping, event organising and hospitality administration skills.
This course will prepare you for progression to NQ Hospitality (Level 6) or the NQ Events Organisation (Level 6) and develops your employability skills to allow you to work in the main sectors of the hospitality industry including restaurants, bars, hotels, event and contract catering at a practical level, serving and dealing with customers.
Entry requirements
Minimum entry requirements
- One National 5 qualification at Grade C or above AND three National 4 qualifications including English and Mathematics; OR
- Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

ESOL entry requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum ESOL Intermediate level 2 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher for HNC/D courses.What you study

After the course
Careers
The course will prepare you for a job in the hotel, restaurant and bar sectors of the hospitality industry.
Continuing Study
You can progress to the Level 6 NQ Hotel, Restaurant and Bar operations course after the successful completion of this level 5 course.
Teaching
How the course is taught
This is a practical course with many of your classes taking place in a practical setting. There are some theory-based units, numeracy and costing, which are delivered in an interactive classroom setting.
You will be taught in our two restaurants, the Bistro and Scholars’. You will organise live events and gain knowledge on the making and serving of wines and spirits. Hotel reception skills and hotel housekeeping skills will also be taught.
Assessment methods
There are a range of assessment methods which include, multiple-choice questions, practical observation checklist, short report writing and self-study projects.

It would be helpful if you had a laptop for the course.
Dress code
You will be required to wear a college uniform when you are being taught in our restaurants. This uniform is provided by the college.
