Overview

Are you currently working in a barbering salon but want to improve your knowledge, skills and require industry leading skills to enhance your career?

This exciting course provides you with the training needed to pursue a career barbering. During the course, you'll take part in a variety of activities including demonstrations, presentations, pop up barbering shops within the college, and competitions.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

  • You must be employed in a gent’s barbers with a minimum of 3 years’ experience in Barbering; OR
  • NC/NQ Barbering (SCQF Level 5); OR
  • Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

Additional selection requirements

  • Where English is not your first language - ESOL Intermediate 2 certificate required.
  • You may have to undertake a skills test to demonstrate you are at the appropriate level for this course.

ESOL entry requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum ESOL Intermediate level 2 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher for HNC/D courses.

What you study

You will study units which include:-
  • Creatively Cut Hair Using a Combination of Barbering Techniques.
  • Design and Create a range of Facial Hair Shapes.
  • Provide Shaving Services.
  • Provide Client Consultation.
  • Photography: Portraiture Skills.

After the course

Careers

You will be able to gain employment as a senior Barber or apply for training positions within the Barbering industry and Further Education.

Teaching

How the course is taught

The course is taught in a live salon environment with hands-on practical tasks and also written work.  You will work with live models for assessment. You will also carry out a work placement within the Barbering industry.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include online from SQA and practical observed assessments within the classroom.
