Overview

This course is aimed at school leaver’s age 16 plus who have left or thinking of leaving with no clear career plans. Level 1 would be a fantastic transition from school into college and would support a young person get ready for employment within the hairdressing/barbering industry. This pre-entry qualification would equip you with the skills and confidence to apply for hairdressing vacancies or progress into full-time courses. 

The course will run for 6 months from January - June 2018.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements but an interest in the industry would be favoured.

If English is not your first language you will be required to have ESOL Intermediate 2.

You'll be invited for a group and/or individual interview, where you'll get the opportunity to find out more about the course and tell us why you're interested in the subject.

What you study

You will study a range of units:
  • Prepare for Hair Services and Maintain Work Areas.
  • Contribute to the Development of Effective Working Relationships.
  • Blow Dry Hair.
  • Shampoo and Condition hair.
  • Plait and Twist Hair using Basic techniques.
  • Assist with Reception Duties.

After the course

Careers

You can apply for full time employment  within the Modern Apprenticeships program Hairdressing/Barbering or apply for full time courses 

Continuing study

Successful students can progress on to:

You would have the skills to go into the industry as a Modern Apprentice or employed. You would also have the qualifications to progress into a full time hairdressing or barbering course.

Teaching

How the course is taught

The course is taught in a live salon environment with hands on practical tasks and also written work.  You will work closely assisting higher level classes with clients. You will also carry out a work placement within a salon in industry.  Support will be put in place where necessary from Student Services and Lecturers to assist you throughout the course

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include written and practical observed assessments.

A kit will be supplied to each student that will give you the tools needed to complete the course.
