Merchant Navy Open Day

Event Date:
Saturday, April 27, 2019 -
09:30 to 15:00

  • Riverside Campus

Our Merchant Navy Open Day, here in Glasgow, Scotland, aims to give you an insight into what a career in the maritime industry has to offer and the training programmes necessary to qualify as a ship's navigation or engineer officer in the merchant navy.

Many of the major British shipping companies and recruitment & training representatives who recruit cadets and crew will be there to give information about the career opportunities they offer. Our teaching staff will be on hand to talk about the academic side of training.

You'll be able to talk to our officer cadets, who'll be happy to share their first-hand experience of the training and life as a cadet, both at the City of Glasgow College and on board ship.

A number of our training facilities are open and you're welcome to tour the campus and accommodation nearby. Our working engine room will be running all day, giving you first-hand experience of a working engine room. Also, our bridge simulators will be working giving you the chance to experience piloting your own ship.

The Nautical Faculty of the City of Glasgow College is committed to break through traditional gender stereotyping and encourage women to choose a career in the Merchant Navy. To promote careers at sea for women, the Faculty will have a "Women Into Maritime" stand available during the Merchant Navy Open Day with ambassadors and female cadets on hand to share their experience. We are committed to work with the industry to contribute to a diverse and multi-skilled Merchant Navy workforce.  You can find out more about the College Equality, Diversity and Inclusion policies here.
