An apprentice with World Skills

City of Glasgow College showcases its apprentices as it celebrates Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2020.

Sophie McConville is a Modern Apprentice for WorldSkills Scotland, and has held her role as co-ordinator at the college for the past year.

The 19-year old guides competitors taking part in WorldSkills’ competitions through each different stage; from regional heats, training sessions and boot camps, to the national and international competitions.

When asked about the highlights of her apprenticeship, Sophie talked of supporting the only female student in the wall and floor tiling competition at WorldSkills UK.

“Working with the WorldSkills team at City of Glasgow College has been a brilliant experience,” she said

“It is such a varied role, from helping the students, to creating content for our social media channels and the website. I’ve learned a lot and gained a lot of confidence.”

When her apprenticeship ends in June, Sophie hopes she will be able to carry on working at the college, and with WorldSkills.

“I want to continue developing my skills for the rest of my apprenticeship and I look forward to seeing what the future will bring.”

Margaret Darroch, Curriculum Head for WorldSkills at City of Glasgow College, said:

“Sophie is an enthusiastic and valued member of our WorldSkills team. The apprenticeship scheme has created an ideal opportunity for her, and is helping to further develop her role and experience.

“Modern Apprenticeships play a vital part in addressing the country’s skills gap. Our college currently delivers up to 600 apprenticeships across a number of different frameworks, and this is expanding year on year.”

Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2020 is running from Monday 2 to Friday 6 March. For more information on modern apprenticeships at City of Glasgow College please see our website.
