Birthday celebrations for Super College Salon

Since opening just one year ago, City of Glasgow College’s Amethyst Salon has helped launch the careers of six student hair stylists and established a client base of 400 per month.

The salon, based within the college’s stunning City campus on Cathedral Street, links the college directly with the hairdressing industry by giving newly qualified hairdressing students the chance to rent a chair in the salon providing a platform on which to start their own business.

The commercial rent-a-chair agreement was a first for a college in Scotland.

Cristina Devine, Amethyst Manager, said:

“One year on and I am thrilled to still be part of this pioneering concept. Our client base has expanded from zero to 400 a month and we have increased the number of stylists renting chairs from one to four. What’s unique about Amethyst is that graduate hairdressers are able to gain experience and master their skills within a supportive and coach-led environment.”

Paul Little, Principal and Chief Executive at City of Glasgow College, said:

“Our college is not only closing the gap between education and industry, producing its own talent pipeline, but we are continuing to bring business into the city whilst providing the public with a competitive, top quality hair and beauty venue. Amethyst salon is one of many success stories at City of Glasgow College and I am delighted to offer my congratulations on their first anniversary.”

As part of that success story the salon is launching a finishing school which will offer bespoke training to recently qualified stylists. Cristina explains:

“A number of salon managers approached us requesting specific training for their staff to bring them to the level of expertise required to be salon ready.

“Our tailor-made finishing programme starts in March and is specifically designed for hairdressing graduates, those returning to the industry from a break, or stylists and technicians who wish to perfect their techniques and build their confidence. The course will enhance their skills along with styling expertise to help them reach their potential in the commercial world.”

Amethyst is open from Monday to Saturday. Details on opening times and treatments are available on the college website.
