College hosts inaugural Scottish Tourism Careers Festival

Stewart Travel, Thomas Cook, STA, SEC, Travel2, and Glasgow Welcomes were just some of the travel and tourism representatives who took part in the Scottish Tourism Careers Festival at City of Glasgow College.

Hosted by the college and the Springboard Charity, the careers event welcomed school pupils from across Glasgow as well as students studying Tourism at the college.

Gail Morrison, Curriculum Head for Tourism at City of Glasgow College, said:

“Tourism in Scotland contributes around £6 billion to the Scottish GDP and is identified as a growth sector by the Scottish Government. It is also a sector which offers a vast range of employment opportunities at home as well as internationally.

“This inaugural Careers Festival was an excellent opportunity to bring our students to the attention of the industry as well as making them aware of potential prospects and introducing school pupils to an exciting and broad ranging sector to work in.”

Marc Crothall is Chief Executive of the Scottish Tourism Alliance, and said:

“I think it’s fantastic that City of Glasgow College have had the foresight to organise this event which has proved invaluable for both students and our travel and tourism partners. Students were given the opportunity to make direct contact with potential future employers, while industry operators were able to meet with and pass on their knowledge and experience to the future talent pipeline.

“Raising the attractiveness of a career in tourism is a key priority for the industry as identified in the tourism skills investment plan, so it was great to have this opportunity.”
