College spearheads partnership with Singapore

City of Glasgow College is helping Singapore to meet the growing demand for skilled employees in the food and beverage industry.

It is the first further education college in the UK and Europe to work with the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS) providing consultancy and supporting the development of a range of vocational, technical and professional programmes for the Institute.

Gary MacLean, chef lecturer and winner of BBC MasterChef: The Professionals 2016, together with Head of Curriculum for Food, Willie McCurrach, will play key roles in the new partnership which was officially launched in Singapore on Tuesday 28 March.

Roy Gardner, Executive Director for Corporate Development & Innovation at City of Glasgow College, said:

“We are delighted to have formally launched our new partnership with MDIS which will see City of Glasgow College deliver its innovative teaching and learning methods in Singapore. The opening of the new culinary and bakery studio is part of a move by MDIS to introduce a skills based, practical curriculum for individuals who wish to enter the hospitality, food and beverage sector.”

MDIS Secretary-General, Dr R Theyvendran, said:

“The new facilities and programmes are a part of MDIS’ academic push to introduce more practical, skills-based curricula in the areas of food and beverage, culinary management, fashion and healthcare to nurture future-ready graduates. Our goal is to equip both students and mid-career professionals with future-ready skillsets which the economy will demand.”

Willie McCurrach, Head of Curriculum for Food at City of Glasgow College, said:

“Gary and I will be helping to deliver NC Professional Cookery courses as part of the MDIS School of Tourism and Hospitality and those classes will begin in September. A very hands-on and valuable element of the launch was showcasing a variety of the culinary and practical skills that we will be teaching.”

Gary Maclean, chef lecturer, City of Glasgow College, said:

“The hospitality and catering industries are enjoying a boom and it is very exciting to be part of this new partnership between City of Glasgow College and MDIS which will make a difference to young people’s lives. The facilities in the new culinary and bakery studio are outstanding and an excellent example of what we have achieved together already.”
