Equality, Diversity and Inclusiveness in Action

Bunmi Onanuga and Laura Phillips have won City of Glasgow College’s annual Embracing Diversity Competition with Project Steminist.

Two HND Mechanical Engineering students have devised a computer game to give women and young people a feel for STEM subjects, as Laura explained:

“Eco City is about tackling inequality in the STEM industry. The game challenges players to create a city whose success depends on creating a fair and inclusive society.”

Students entering the competition are asked to consider what Equality, Diversity and Inclusion means to them and to use their creativity to find the most effective expression of the College’s ‘embracing diversity’ ethos. Entries from across the college were judged according to level of effort, originality of concept, quality of work, impact and scope for raising awareness.

City of Glasgow College Depute Principal, Janis Carson, said:

“The Embracing Diversity Competition is an important element of the learning and teaching experience. Our college serves a diverse community so our student numbers and workforce must reflect that multiplicity. Year on year the entries for this competition succeed in embracing diversity with their thoughtful creativity and inventive message.”

Graeme Brewster, Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Manager, said:

“We were delighted to have Talat Yaqoob, Director of Equate Scotland, speak at the ceremony. This competition has now been running for six years and is going from strength to strength.

“Its primary focus is to encourage students and staff to consider what fairness, opportunity and respect mean in practice and the judges were impressed by the clear and powerful ED&I message of Laura and Bunmi overall winning entry.

The two students were also the overall winners for their Faculty of Building, Engineering and Energy.

Bunmi and Laura will showcase their pioneering computer game at the International STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) Students’ Forum which takes place in Hong Kong on 16/17 June. Project Steminist - was put forward as a showcase presentation following three rounds of competition between the boldest and brightest young minds at a global level.
