Footballers’ Association Praise TUEC for online courses

The Trade Union Education Centre (TUEC) based at City of Glasgow College’s Riverside campus is one of the largest in the UK.

Since the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic and onset of lockdown measures, TUEC staff have transferred the majority of its face-to-face classes to online formats, to ensure that an education programme remains available.

New to the curriculum are Spanish and IT classes being delivered specifically for professional football players.

Mark Pollitt, Curriculum Head at the Trade Union Education Centre, said:

“We have a long term relationship with the Scottish Professional Footballers’ Association who asked us to run language and IT classes for their players. We are now delivering two online Spanish classes and one IT class through Zoom which are proving very popular, with almost 30 players accessing the three sessions.

Chris Higgins, Personal Development Officer for the Professional Footballers’ Association, commented:

“Feedback from the players who attended the IT course was it was excellent. They commented on lecturer, Paula Bauge, who made the course really easy for them to follow. They also enjoyed the fact that were able to do the course from home. It is testament to City of Glasgow College and Paula for ensuring the first IT online course to run for footballers and PFA Scotland was a success.”

“It’s a new and fun learning opportunity during this difficult period,” added Mark who explained that, as part of the Scottish Collective Learning Partnership, the TUEC responds to the needs of the workforce by continually developing the delivery and content of its courses.

“The current health crisis is raising issues many have not dealt with before, so for us it’s about looking at the courses we’re offering, how they can be offered, and how we can support the trade unions at this time. As a result we’re also delivering computing, sign language, and employability skills courses online, ensuring that education remains accessible for all learners.”
