Industry recognition for college’s oxygen depletion course

City of Glasgow College has been awarded official recognition by the Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB) for an innovative digital course to raise awareness of oxygen depletion in enclosed spaces.

The Centre and Course Recognition Awards were developed by the MNTB to provide an independent assessment of maritime training around the world.

Linus Reichenbach, Project Manager for STEM and Innovation at City of Glasgow College said:

"The free online course, developed by the college, is helping to highlight the dangers of entering enclosed spaces. We want seafarers, regardless of the vessel type they work on, to understand that a situation, which might look safe, may not be.

“The course follows on from research carried out by the college - in partnership with maritime industry specialists and shipping companies - to determine the rate of oxygen depletion in confined spaces in ships at sea.

“It has been invaluable to have the support of MNTB throughout our development, and to now be officially recognised by them is a resounding endorsement of our online course."

Kathryn Neilson, Director of the Merchant Navy Training Board, added:

“Any enclosed space has the potential to be dangerous due to a build-up of invisible, odourless, hazardous gasses and low oxygen levels as a result of a concentration of CO & CO2 gases.

“In our industry, we are still seeing far too many fatal accidents occurring due to crew not being trained effectively in the use of personal protective equipment and safety procedures associated with enclosed spaces.

“What the college’s course does is to increase knowledge around the dangers and fatal consequences of not taking the right precautions when entering an enclosed space.”

The Entering Enclosed Spaces aboard Ships Safety Awareness course was awarded Course Recognition for achieving a detailed series of excellent practice criteria set by the MNTB. The free 90-minute online course - accessible to all those who would like to develop their awareness of the dangers involved with enclosed spaces - also highlights the importance of remote learning material which enables candidates to have a reference source available to refresh knowledge.

The Merchant Navy Training Board Course Recognition scheme provides independent verification for ‘gold standard’ training centres, whilst also serving as a valuable quality improvement process in its own right. The scheme is ISO9001 accredited and has the full involvement and support of the UK Chamber of Shipping, the trade association for the UK shipping industry.
