Pro-Chef Live: inspiring talks for college cookery students

A series of talks by professional chefs and industry specialists got underway this week for HND professional cookery students at City of Glasgow College.

Pro-chef live will feature well-known names and experts in a particular field. Gary Maclean, the college’s Executive Chef, is asking the questions which are provided by the students.

Calum Montgomery, Chef Proprietor of Edinbane Lodge on the Isle of Skye, kicked off the series on Thursday (18 February). A former student of the college, he enjoys the chance to meet current students: “I was honoured to be asked to take part as a guest chef. I really enjoyed engaging with the students over Zoom and hope the session was beneficial for them.

“I remember attending similar events when I was studying at City of Glasgow College. Looking back, I feel they gave me a good understanding of the challenges I was likely to encounter in this profession later in my career.”

May Donald, Associate Dean for Culinary Arts & Bakery at City of Glasgow College, said: “As a former student, Calum is very aware of the knowledge our students have and what insights are relevant to them.

“Hearing from some of the UK’s culinary specialists, and putting questions to them, will be an invaluable learning experience for our students. It’s important that they have the chance to make connections within the industry and, particularly given the times we are in, to hear first-hand from a chef who attended their college and has gone on to enjoy such a successful career.”

Kenneth Hett, Curriculum Head for Culinary Arts & Bakery, added: “All the talks take place on Zoom so both our first and second year professional cookery students can watch and post questions for Gary to ask. Our aim is to run these events weekly. We have a number of names confirmed including Gregg Wallace, best known as co-presenter of MasterChef, Celebrity MasterChef and MasterChef the Professionals.”

Next week the students will hear from Ewald Notter, who was the first pastry professional inducted into the pastry art and design Hall of Fame, and is internationally renowned as a master of sugar and chocolate work.

Confirmed future guest chefs also include:

Culinary Arts Twitter and Instagram pages have been created to provide a forum for past, present and future students to engage with the events and activities current students undertake.
