Scottish line up announced for European showdown

Three students from City of Glasgow College and New College Lanarkshire have been selected for Team UK and will take on Europe’s best at EuroSkills Graz 2020.

This prestigious skills competition is scheduled for January 2021 having been postponed from September this year, and is seen as an important indicator in how the UK’s skills systems measure up against key economic competitors across Europe.

City of Glasgow College is represented by Greta Volungevicitue in Visual Merchandising, with Lewis Dymock and Lewis Batchelor representing New College Lanarkshire in Chemical Laboratory Technician (demo) and Mechanical Engineering (CAD) respectively.

Paul Little, Principal and Chief Executive at City of Glasgow College, and Ambassador for WorldSkills in Scotland, said:

“These unique skills competitions play a vital role in raising industry standards and driving up technical and professional education standards. They also provide a visible global platform to showcase the expert level our students reach.

"To consistently have strong representation from Scottish colleges is testament to the breadth of talent, skills expertise, professionalism and commitment that exists at all levels across our sector. Our congratulations and best wishes go to all three they continue their training.”

The Minister for Further Education, Higher Education and Science, Richard Lochhead, said the three students are doing the country proud and wished them all the best, adding:

“Scotland has a long tradition of scientific, engineering and creative innovation. It is great to see, once again, that Scottish students are excelling in these specialisms.”

Margaret Darroch, Head of the WorldSkills Academy at City of Glasgow College, added:

“Keeping our students engaged and motivated throughout lockdown and this crisis has been a challenge which they, and their coaches, have all risen to. Our virtual boot camps - which provide intense team building training sessions, equipping our students with tools and techniques to help them get competition ready – have been an enormous success. Our training schedule has not let up and Greta is working hard on her preparations for Graz.”
